Pre-Apprenticeship Guide

The Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (BBC) requires that before applying for your Apprentice License, you must complete the online Pre-Apprenticeship Training Course. This course provides essential information to begin your apprenticeship, including health and safety, hygiene, regulations, and more.

1.How to Take the Online Pre-Apprenticeship Course

Before starting, make sure you meet the following requirements:

You are at least 16 years old.
You have completed 10th grade or equivalent.
You have a valid ID and a Social Security Number or ITIN.

Steps:

Visit the Cosmetica (CCBUAC) website and click on the Training section:
👉 https://www.ccbuac.org/training
Select the Pre-Apprenticeship tab.
You will be redirected to the official California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology website, where you can take the Pre-Apprenticeship course.

Once there, follow these steps:

Go to the BBC website:
👉 www.barbercosmo.ca.gov
In the top menu, click Applicants.
Select Apprenticeship Information.
Click Pre-Apprentice Training Course.

You will be directed to a page with the requirements, course duration, and the direct link to the online training.

2. Register and Create Your Account

Go to:
👉 https://barbercosmotraining.com/
Click Login / Enroll Now to create your account.
Check the box I Agree to accept the terms.
Enter your personal information accurately.
Select the correct program: Cosmetology or Barbering.
Save your information and follow the course instructions.

3. Complete Your Pre-Apprenticeship Course

Enter the online training module.
Complete all sections and activities (none can be skipped). Please make sure to pay close attention to the videos, as you will be required to answer questions based on the information presented. You will not be able to download your certificate until you have successfully completed and passed the entire course.

4. Download Your Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate

Your certificate must include:

Your full name
Course name
Completion date
Board of Barbering and Cosmetology logo

Once completed:

Download and/or print your Certificate of Completion.
Email your certificate to: info@cosmeticaedu.com

⚠Important: Your certificate is required to submit your Apprentice License application. Your application cannot be processed until we receive your certificate.

Note: After your documents are submitted to the Division of Apprenticeship Standards and the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, the estimated time to receive your Apprentice License is 3–6 weeks.

During this time, you must obtain the study materials required for your RSI classes. Students may not attend class without the required materials; failure to have them can affect your apprenticeship.

Required Materials per Profession:

A. Cosmetology

Edition #14 – Set of 4 books
Cost: $375.00 + $50.00 shipping

B. Barbering

6th Edition – Set of 3 books
Cost: $350.00 + $50.00 shipping

Once your license is approved, you will receive a congratulatory letter with important instructions and regulations for your program. Follow every step carefully to complete your apprenticeship successfully and earn your professional license!

🎉 “YEAH! I received my Apprentice License — what’s next?”

Once you receive your license, you may begin working with clients under the supervision of your instructor or trainer. You will be paid the minimum wage applicable in your area.
